African "Aklama" Figure

"Among the numerous art objects used by the Ewe tribe in southeastern Ghana, there is probably none as little known [...] as the small statues of helper spirits known as 'Aklama kpakpewo' or 'Aklama' for short. This type of cultural object consists mainly of small figures, primarily human, as well as forms from the animal and material world. They average 12 to 25 centimeters in height, though much larger examples have also been documented. These Aklama, sacred objects of a highly private nature, intended to provide protection and bring good luck, appear to have a bond with their owners similar to that of the Ikenga of the Igbo and the Ile Ori of the Yoruba, which are already among the best-researched good-luck amulets in Africa. In contrast to the Ikenga and the Ile Ori, however, the Aklama generally fulfill precisely defined functions, for example as helpers in the daily life of their worshippers. Economic prosperity, trade, craftsmanship, hunting, fishing, the management of love and other interpersonal relationships, as well as having children, are among the concerns that the Aklama are called upon to address. Given their highly specific spiritual function, it is not uncommon for a person to maintain relationships with several Aklama at the same time."
